Mars Chocolate is introducing Dove brand Silky Smooth Cookies and Creme bars and individually wrapped Dove Promises. The new products will be showcased at the Sweets and Snacks Expo in Chicago May 8-10 and are scheduled for national rollout in September.
The Department of Agriculture has loosened restrictions on sugar imports and will now allow an additional 450,000 short tons. The Sweetener Users Association applauded the move but said, "USDA acknowledged that today’s increase is not likely to be the last one needed, and in our view it would have been even more helpful had USDA announced a quantity that would have, by itself, allowed stocks to reach USDA’s target range." An additional 400,000 to 500,000 short tons may be required, according to an informal survey of sugar brokers.
Researchers say substances called amorfrutins found in licorice contain anti-inflammatory properties that in sufficient quantities could ease symptoms of diabetes. "The amorfrutins can be used as functional nutritional supplements or as mild remedies that are individually tailored to the patient," said lead researcher Dr. Sascha Sauer.
Cargill has added a Center of Expertise and added production capacity at its cocoa facility in Wormer, the Netherlands. "This new world-class facility, along with our existing network and our food ingredient expertise will support our cocoa and chocolate growth strategy," said Jos de Loor, managing director for cocoa & chocolate.
DKSH has opened an innovation center in Taipei, Taiwan, to develop concepts and formulas for confectioners and bakers who cater to the Taiwanese market. "With the rising middle class in Asia, there is growing demand for premium and healthier products, which generates naturally the demand for innovative ingredients in Taiwan," said Leng Stricker, communications manager.
