Carload traffic on U.S. railroads decreased 3.6% in the week ending April 21 year-on-year, but intermodal volume grew 6% in the same period, according to the Association of American Railroads. Chemical shipments in North America grew 6.2%, year-over-year. Freight carload traffic for the first 16 weeks of this year fell 3.2% compared to 2011 levels, but intermodal gained 2.6% in the same period, AAR noted.
