Middle-school English teacher Claire Needell Hollander describes in this opinion piece an enrichment program in which she teaches classic works of literature to small groups of inner-city students in sixth to eighth grades. The course, designed to prepare students for a more competitive high-school reading culture, has given way this year to more courses in test preparation, which may lead to better test scores but will not instill a love of reading, she writes.
