Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital used induced pluripotent stem cells from patients with cystic fibrosis to create airway-lining cells with the defect that causes the disease. The advance allows the production of cells for drug screening. Separately, researchers from Boston University produced air sac cells from embryonic mouse stem cells. The team hopes to use the process to produce cells from human stem cell lines. Both studies were reported in the journal Cell Stem Cell.
