Census data reveal that, in the period following Hurricane Katrina, more than 100,000 people left the New Orleans area. During the same span -- 2005 to 2009 -- about 61,000 people moved to the area. In deciding where to go, emigrants from the area appear to have been influenced by factors such as city size and proximity to New Orleans, according to Tulane University geographer Richard Campanella.
