A study in the Journal of Palliative Medicine showing how some physicians take action against palliative care colleagues who try to abide by patients' advance directives "reveals how deeply moral watchdogs are embedded in the ranks of the medical professionals," writes Barbara Coombs Lee, president of Compassion & Choices. She says physicians who work to honor end-of-life decisions need legal protections for care that is consistent with standards of practice and based on informed, documented health care decisions.
