Patients over the age of 80 who spend more than four days in an ICU have up to a 75% higher risk of dying in the hospital, according to preliminary results of a University at Buffalo study. Lead author and geriatric specialist Bruce Naughton says more technology does not translate into better care and is linked to late admission to hospice programs and stressful patient transfers within three days of death.
