Hospital chefs and dietitians at Children's Hospital in Lawrenceville, Pa., work together on special meals that meet dietary restrictions but also create "food memories" and entice sick patients to eat. Chefs shopped for special ingredients and had to ensure there was no cross-contamination when making a birthday cake for a patient with pediatric cancer who had undergone a bone marrow transplant. "We call the chef in when we need the big guns ... when we need them to do something out of the box," said clinical dietitian Ann Condon-Meyers.
