Verbal IQ tests, in which students are asked questions out loud, may lead some students who have autism and are not highly verbal to be incorrectly labeled as having intellectual disabilities, say two researchers who were presenters Friday at the CEC 2012 Convention and Expo in Denver. Testing outcomes for these students can be affected by many other factors as well, including whether the students know the teachers or psychologists administering the tests, say Douglas Carothers, of Florida Gulf Coast University, and Ronald Taylor, of Florida Atlantic University, who are researching the issue for a paper.
