Rebecca Mieliwocki was named the National Teacher of the Year on Monday and will be honored today by President Barack Obama in a ceremony at the White House. Mieliwocki, a seventh-grade teacher in suburban Los Angeles, said educators in her state are under increased pressure to do more with fewer resources and are facing a new evaluation system. Mieliwocki said teachers should be held accountable, but they should be evaluated based on several factors -- not solely on test scores.
