Louisiana and Arkansas officials are urging owners and veterinarians to be alert for signs of pigeon fever, a bacterial disease that causes external abscesses and sometimes fatal internal abscesses in horses. The disease often is more prevalent during a drought. Last year, Louisiana had 33 confirmed cases, but estimates put the actual infection number much higher, up to 300, as many owners forgo lab testing because it doesn't change treatment or outcome.
