One out of every 84 of the highest-risk patients experiences a life-threatening blood clot following outpatient surgery, according to a study published in Annals of Surgery. The study evaluated more than 200,000 outpatient surgeries at U.S. medical centers. The data highlight the importance of evaluating patients' risk factors, according to the study's lead author.
