Monday was National Healthcare Decisions Day, which focuses on increasing awareness of the importance of advance directives. U.S. data from 2003 showed fewer than 50% of severely or terminally ill patients had an advance directive. In 2006, Pew Research found 84% of the public supported laws allowing terminally ill patients to make decisions about end-of-life care even though only 30% had a living will.
