Metformin treatment did not show any significant effect in cardiovascular or all-cause mortality in diabetes patients, a review in PLoS Medicine found. However, researchers cautioned that their findings were not definitive. Dr. Vivian Fonseca, president for medicine and science at the American Diabetes Association, said many of the studies reviewed lasted a year or less, but eight to 10 years is needed to examine the effectiveness of the drug.
