Researchers from Drexel University are looking to nature for ideas about how to build a better airplane by studying beetles that are being remotely controlled. The engineers implanted four electrodes into the rhinoceros beetle's body to control wing movements and will analyze the effects of tiny changes in contraction, extension, direction and flapping frequency of the wings. "A quantitative investigation of aerodynamics and wing kinematics in beetle flight will shed new light on the evolution of flapping flight in nature," said team leader MinJun Kim.
