A science class project on plastics inspired eighth-grade gifted and talented student Sierra Yost to draft a proposal to ban plastic bags, or charge a fee for them, at some large stores in her hometown of Windham, Maine. Yost began researching the issue after studying plastics in science class and discovered similar plastic-bag ordinances in place in other communities. Town staff are rewriting Yost's proposal as an ordinance, which is set to be considered by town officials at an upcoming council meeting.
