Mucus from pigs' stomachs has antiviral properties and could be used as a component in human products, such as toothpaste, mouthwash and wound ointments, to act as a barrier to viruses including influenza, HIV and human papillomavirus, researchers said. Swine mucus is already present in artificial saliva used to treat humans with dry mouth.
