Some Texas school districts have decided to stop purchasing lean finely textured beef -- a decision that could require them to switch vendors. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the product is safe, but it will give districts the option to purchase beef without the meat product. The USDA has allowed the beef product into meat it purchases since the 1990s and allows about 15% of the composition of the beef to be made from lean finely textured beef, according to a spokesman.
