China could overtake Japan as the world's biggest corn importer by 2014, amid rising demand for meat among China's growing middle class, according to the U.S. Grains Council. China has already imported and ordered 4 million tons of corn in the 2011-2012 marketing year, more than fourfold the total from the previous year, according to an April 10 report from the Department of Agriculture. "It could be a matter of two to three years" before China becomes the world's biggest corn importer, said USGC President Thomas Dorr.
