The European Union may increase by 250,000 metric tons the amount of sugar producers can sell at a reduced rate within the EU. "In order to make the market more fluid and to prepare for a possible tighter market situation later in the marketing year, the commission’s services introduced some draft proposals to member states for discussion in last week’s management committee," spokesperson Karolina Kottova said.

Retailers in Portland, Ore., report growing sales of gluten-free products. Locally, the Craft Brewers Alliance has introduced Omission, a line of beer made without gluten; and Sina Bakery creates and sells a gluten-free Brazilian cheese bread.
Experts are refuting the claims of Dr. Robert Lustig, who appeared on a "60 Minutes Sunday" segment claiming sugar consumption is a key cause of diabetes, heart disease and other ailments. "It's not sugar that's the poison, but the dose that makes the poison," said Dr. David Katz, founding director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center.
