Katie Workman, author of "The Mom 100 Cookbook," has developed three recipes for Sam's Club: Brussels sprouts with mustard and bacon vinaigrette, citrus-marinated salmon and sweet potato pie. The recipes were created as part of the retailer's Simply Delicious Chef Brigade, which is in its second year and provides recipes from widely known chefs and cookbook authors.
Dietary intervention led to a mean reduction of nearly 8.8 pounds of weight gain in pregnant women, compared with 1.5 pounds for exercise only and 2.2 pounds for exercise plus diet, an analysis in BMJ revealed. Researchers also noted a lower risk of pregnancy complications including preeclampsia, diabetes and premature birth in those who underwent dietary intervention.
About 34% of homeless people in the U.S. are obese, about the same rate as the general population, according to a study in the Journal of Urban Health. Researchers said reliance on cheap food that is high in fat and sugar may play a role in obesity among the homeless, as well as a lack of physical activity, sleep deprivation and stress.
Registered dietitian Ellen Coleman says nitrates used to process meats are unhealthy but nitrates found naturally in vegetables, especially in beets and leafy greens, are very healthy. The body turns dietary nitrates into nitric oxide, which can reduce blood pressure and improve athletic performance.
