Since 2005, the Latino & African American High School Internship Program has offered hands-on learning opportunities to Los Angeles-area students interested in careers in science. The six-week biomedical program brings in students from South and East Los Angeles schools and focuses on childhood diseases.
More than 600 rising ninth-graders in Minneapolis are earning high-school credits for attending summer school. The district's six-week Fast Track Scholar program offers 11 classes, only three of which are remedial. The other eight allow students to get a head start on their high-school courses. The program also gives students an idea of what to expect in high school, program coordinator Elizabeth Bortke says.
Aging, genetics, medications, hormonal changes and weight loss or gain can cause men to develop excess breast fat or glandular tissue, according to plastic surgeon Brian Hass. Gynecomastia can be treated with liposuction or surgery, Hass writes: "Following surgery, our male patients tells us they feel less self-conscious in their fitted shirts and are not embarrassed to go shirtless on the beach, gym or boat."
A two-year autism treatment pilot program in Utah is still without promised funding from insurance companies and a bank. The program is expected to provide therapy for about 350 children ages 2 to 6 in the state, which has the nation's highest rate of autism. The legislator who sponsored the bill to create the program said the money is on the way.
After liposuction, normal-weight women who remained sedentary had a 10% increase, on average, in visceral fat four months later. However, no gain was seen in those who started exercising after the surgery, Brazilian researchers reported in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. The study followed 36 women.
