About one-sixth of the roughly 600 state education board seats across the country are up for election or reappointment this year, according to Jim Kohlmoos, the executive director the National Association of State Boards of Education. With many leadership positions changing hands, state boards might play an increasingly important role and act as a "stablizing force," Kohlmoos said. In addition, Kohlmoos also noted the most important challenge facing state boards will be helping districts prepare for and implement the common core.
