Removing tartar from the teeth of an animal that is not anesthetized is literally only scratching the surface of the problem, writes veterinarian Christie Long. While a tooth may look healthy once the tartar is chipped off, advanced dental disease may be present beneath the gum line, and only a thorough exam under general anesthesia will reveal the extent of the problem and allow it to be addressed, notes Dr. Long.
