With almost every major nation opposed to the European Union's Emissions Trading System, the question is how the EU will enforce it. The burden of enforcement rests with individual EU member states, risking retaliation for the state and its airline from the offending country.
Airlines are expecting planes to be fuller during the Thanksgiving holidays -- 150,000 more than in the previous year. Airlines for America's chief economist says that in the third quarter airlines saw a 5.6% increase in revenue -- but 10 of the largest U.S. airlines experienced 6.2% higher costs, reducing the profit margin to about 50 cents per passenger.
As Delta Air Lines prepared to start its oil refinery in Trainer, Pa., the price of gasoline dropped in New York Harbor on Wednesday. "I think the market feels they will begin processing crude at the end of September and has a wait-and-see attitude about when they get the downstream units online and make finished products such as gasoline, jet fuel and diesel," said Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates.
The New York metropolitan area handles about 4,000 flights a day and its three major airports are bordered by water and developed land, limiting expansion options. So, even though steps are being taken to alleviate some congestion, the skies above the Big Apple aren't about to magically clear up anytime soon. "Delays in the New York area are currently responsible for roughly 33% of the flight hold-ups across the U.S...," Charisse Jones writes.
