Most Asian-Pacific markets advanced Thursday after President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner said they were confident the U.S. "fiscal cliff" could be avoided. Japan's Nikkei 225 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index each gained 1%. South Korea's Kospi rose 1.2%. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 moved up 0.7%. Taiwan's Taiex added 0.9%. India's Sensex was up 1.8% at mid-afternoon. China's Shanghai Composite bucked the trend falling 0.5%.
