Africa is seeing a surge in interest in the mobile space, with 262 million users of SMS estimated by the end of the year and 71 million users accessing the Internet by mobile. Marketers are starting to take advantage of this trend, as this year, mobile ad spending is set to top $136 million across the continent, with more than 40% of that in the form of SMS ads, says Thecla Mbongue, senior analyst for Informa Telecoms & Media in South Africa.
