The Freedom of Flight challenge is a relay flight in Scotland launched by pilots with disabilities to raise funds for Flying Scholarships for Disabled People. "FDSP helped me realize my dream of flying a light aircraft solo," said Pauline Gallagher, a pilot who is taking part in the event.
After Sporty's Pilot Shop announced the 172LITE, a pre-owned Cessna refurbished especially for entry-level pilot training, the company was flooded with inquiries. Sporty's is now offering the airplane to flight schools and flying clubs across the country.
Lt. Col. Carolyn Guertin was only 13 years old when she volunteered for the Civil Air Patrol. Now 86, Guertin has been a member of CAP for 73 years and continued to fly until three years ago. She was recently honored with the Congressional Gold Medal for her service with the CAP during WWII.
Friends of Oceano Airport in California will host its fourth annual Toys for Tots event this weekend. The collection drive, hosted in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps, will feature live music, a tri-tip barbecue and fire engines, antique cars and aircraft on display. Organizers say that in past years many of the toys collected have been from pilots who fly in.
Hickory Regional Airport in North Carolina lost $167,000 in 2011, but finances have improved this year with the city breaking even on airport operations. According to a city official, it will be the first time in some 20 years that taxpayers have not had to subsidize the airport.
