Virtual charter schools have spent millions of dollars in public funds on TV, radio, newspaper and Internet advertising to attract students to their programs, according to a recent analysis by USA Today. The newspaper found that since 2007 top for-profit charter-school operators collectively have spent about $94.4 million on such advertisements. Critics say the push by virtual charter schools to draw students through advertising could place pressure on other schools to do the same.
