Understanding the costs and benefits of medical treatment at the end of life, putting care choices in writing, and making financial plans can help people live their final days on their terms, experts say. Good planning also includes understanding hospice and palliative care. Porter Storey of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine says palliative care teams, including physicians and nurses, work with patients and families to coordinate treatment and offer services such as counseling and pain management.
