A whale fossil that took two years to extract from where it was found 20 miles off the coast of Georgia looks remarkably similar to the bone structure of the Atlantic gray whale, a species that disappeared in the 18th century due to over-hunting. Carbon dating revealed that the left jawbone of a prehistoric baleen whale -- which was found by divers near Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary -- is 36,000 years old, one of the oldest fossils discovered in the western Atlantic basin, researchers say.
