Federal officials are hurrying to adopt an updated policy for evaluating high-risk studies of the H5N1 avian influenza virus before a moratorium on those studies expires. Scientists from around the world agreed to put a moratorium in place in January after two H5N1 studies revealed how the virus could jump from its avian hosts to mammals -- a discovery that was significant but that some scientists felt involved more risks than benefits.
