A study in Health Affairs said patients who have easy access to primary care after regular office hours make fewer trips to a hospital emergency department. Ann O'Malley, M.D., at the Center for Studying Health System Change, said primary care practices need better support and more compensation for offering after-hours care. "It is hoped that future payment reform under patient-centered medical homes and bundled payments may begin to address these issues," she said.
