Seniors at a high school in Virginia are creating mathematical models to predict who will win the NCAA men's basketball tournament. The students studied models developed by three universities before teaming up to create their own models. "They kind of expanded their math knowledge based on [the] need to create their model rather than just learn something and not see how [it's] applied yet," teacher Linda Gooding said.
WhiteWave Foods plans to invest $69.8 million to expand its dairy facility in Mount Crawford, Va. The facility expansion will increase production of several of WhiteWave's brands, including Silk and New Horizon, and add an expected 36 jobs.
Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin-Robbins stores will exclusively carry bottled water from Nestle Waters North America under a newly signed five-year contract. Nestle Waters includes the Deer Park, Arrowhead, Ice Mountain, Poland Spring, Ozarka and Zephyhills brand products.
Health Diagnostics Laboratory plans to invest about $24 million to expand its 112,000-square-foot headquarters at the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park in Richmond, Va. The six-story building is under construction, but the firm already submitted a development plan to add 100,000 square feet. The expansion is expected to bring the hiring of 400 new workers over the next two years.
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell should back efforts that would pave the way for lifting a long-standing ban on uranium mining in the state, retired military servicemen said. Uranium mining in Pittsylvania County would "strengthen our national security and provide valuable economic growth to Virginia," the veterans wrote in a letter to the governor.
