Helvetica is the corporate typeface du jour, writes Alastair Johnston, in part because it has a reputation for being extremely legible. But in fact, Johnston writes, there are more legible and much less dull alternatives available to designers. "We see it everywhere -- that's why we think we can read Helvetica. ... Helvetica is neutral, but it also symbolizes blandness and conformity," he complains.
