A jump in roofing work in the Los Angeles area as El Nino approaches has left some firms with job backlogs and slower-than-usual customer responses. Burbank-based Shea Roofing is using automated recordings to let clients know that responses may be delayed. Roofing and gutter contractors are working to complete as many jobs as possible before the rains start and make working conditions more hazardous.
Repair work on the rubber roof of the Lauren Manufacturing plant in New Philadelphia, Ohio, sparked a fire. The flames began when workers were fixing a section of the roof "and as they were heating it, apparently it sparked and it got out of control," said Lisa Huntsman, president of the company. The fire, which ran beneath the roofing and metal deck had to be put out from below.
The roof of the Music City Center in Nashville, Tenn., is expected to sport 845 solar photovoltaic panels. Most of the devices have been hoisted to the roof, and installation will start on Feb. 11. The process is expected to reach completion on Mar. 18.
