Preventive care includes regular veterinary visits, vaccines, internal and external parasite control, proper nutrition and exercise, and routine dental care at the veterinary clinic and at home, advises Dr. Gillmeister. A good relationship with a veterinarian is the foundation for the best possible preventive care, Dr. Gillmeister adds.

After hearing anecdotal reports of pharmacy pet medication errors, the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association surveyed veterinarians in the state about the issue. Thirty-five percent of the 110 veterinarians who responded reported at least one instance of an online or retail pharmacy changing a prescribed medication or dose. Other states have conducted similar surveys and gotten similar responses. The AVMA, the OVMA, the Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board and the Oregon Board of Pharmacy are working together to address the issue.
A Belgian malinois that was part of Vice President Joe Biden's security detail died Saturday after accidentally falling off the roof of a six-story parking garage. The dog was part of a team securing the building near the Ritz-Carlton in New Orleans, where Biden was speaking at a fundraiser. Veterinarians at a nearby veterinary hospital were unable to revive the dog after the fall.
According to a survey of 401 owners of veterinary clinics by the American Association of Feline Practitioners and Bayer HealthCare, 78% of respondents see an opportunity to improve cat care, and 46% are making changes in their practices to encourage owners to seek more consistent feline care and to reduce the stress of feline patients. The findings suggest room for improvement among many practices, including such amenities as cat-only waiting and exam rooms.
