Jewel-Osco has named Shane Sampson as its new president. Sampson previously served as president of Jewel-Osco parent New Albertson's Boston-based Shaw's division. Jewel-Osco has also added five more former Dominick's locations in the Chicago area, bringing the retailer's number of Dominick's store purchases to nine.
More than 25 Marketplace by Jewel-Osco stores are being remodeled in Chicago to include more perishables, an expanded specialty department and additional services. The first remodeled store has reopened, featuring a self-service salad bar, a juice bar, an expanded selection of prepared cold and hot food, high-end bakery items and a larger craft-beer section. Jewel-Osco made several charitable donations to mark the grand reopening.
Residents of Kiester, Minn., which has been without a grocery since summer, are beginning the process of opening a community-based store. "We're hoping to get funds from the community, raise support to so that we can put together a grocery store," resident Don Nickel said.

"The ability to quickly impact the top and bottom line and make more informed decisions is a critical component of our strategy to exceed the expectations of our customers," said Scott Frost, chief financial officer, treasurer and senior vice president at Weis.
Rod Koza, chief information officer of Drakes Supermarkets in Australia, says he has upgraded information technology to support hand-held devices for scanning product codes. "The solution means supermarket staff can use PDAs, iPads and other tablets for product ordering on Drakes' network while on the shop floor," he said.
