Alternative methods being pursued now to produce the medical isotope molybdenum-99 without using highly enriched uranium include using target-fuel isotope reactors and aqueous homogenous reactors, according to a study in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine. Other options include accelerator-based production of the isotope through photo-fission or accelerator-driven subcritical assembly, researchers said. The methods may be a long way from being standard, as researchers said they "are balanced on a fine line, with technical breakthroughs on the one hand and long-term economic viability on the other."
