United Airlines will trim positions through voluntary and involuntary measures, primarily in Chicago and Houston. "Today, we announced a difficult but necessary 6 percent reduction in our management and administrative staff that will begin in early February," United Continental Holdings CEO Jeff Smisek told the company's employees in a statement.

"The aircraft is a terrific aircraft, and customers love the aircraft, and I have no doubt that customers will flock back to that airplane once we're able to get it back up again," Smisek said.
The National Transportation Safety Board has yet to come to a conclusion of the cause of issues with the Boeing Dreamliner 787. "As far as design of the aircraft, there are multiple systems to protect against a battery event like this. Those systems did not work as intended," said NTSB chief Deborah Hersman.
US Airways flight attendants will vote on an agreement that outlines their position in case of a merger with American Airlines. The union representing the flight attendants, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, says it supports the labor agreement.
