Scientists using the night-vision capabilities of the Suomi NPP satellite have captured rare images of low-lying clouds off California's coast. The images were released by NASA's Earth Observatory, which operates the Suomi NPP along with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The satellite uses a special Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite "day-night band" and can also detect wildfires, gas flares, auroras and reflected moonlight.
