Replacing sapphire as the base material for light-emitting diodes going into lighting applications is proving difficult to implement, according to Jacob Tam, president of TSMC Solid State Lighting, a subsidiary of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. Making 8-inch wafers of gallium nitride atop a silicon base is complicated, he said, and the brightness of LED chips made with that material is less than sapphire-based LEDs.
