Mark Dunkerley, the CEO of Hawaiian Airlines, said nearly a quarter of interisland airfares go to federal taxes. "There's an extraordinary amount of taxation on air travel," said Dunkerely. "Up to 23 percent of an interisland fare is federal taxes and fees."
'Ohana by Hawaiian plans to expand inter-island flights, adding flights to Maui and the island of Hawai'i next month. 'Ohana, a subsidiary of Hawaiian Airlines, uses turboprop aircraft to connect the islands in Hawai'i.
Hawaiian Airlines subsidiary Ohana by Hawaiian will begin service in March. The turboprop carrier will debut interisland service between Molokai and the Honolulu Airport on March 12, followed by Oahu and the Lanai Airport on March 18.

Hawaiian Airlines President and CEO Mark Dunkerley said the airline's service to the West Coast may cause fares for interisland service to increase. "What everybody wants on the one hand, and where economic pressures are driving us on the other hand, are two entirely separate directions," he said.
