Intel is putting the final touches on Merrifield, an Atom smartphone chip boasting 3D transistors, which the chipmaker says will extend battery life. It will mark the first time Intel has applied its advanced production technology for PCs to mobile devices. Intel is shifting its tablet focus to Windows devices after an early focus on Android. The new chip will reportedly support Asustek's upcoming 7-inch Fonepad, an Android tablet and phone combination.
