Intel's forthcoming Itanium chip, called Kittson, will be made using a 32 nanometer process instead of 64 and won't be socket-compatible with Xeon server chips. The changes may indicate that Intel intends to discontinue the Itanium product, industry watchers note. "It could easily be that this is their way of cutting it back and having essentially an exit strategy," said Insight64 analyst Nathan Brookwood.
