Some Nebraska school districts are working to upgrade classroom door locks to make teachers and students safer from potential intruders. Current locks, installed decades ago, often require teachers to step into the hallway to lock the doors, while new locks being installed allow teachers to safely lock their classroom doors from the inside. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recommended in January 2012 that schools have doors that lock from either side.
