IKEA will launch new in-store candy shops this summer at select stores that feature 45 varieties of gummies, sour candies, marshmallows, chocolate and licorice imported from Europe. The bulk candy, inspired by the Scandanavian tradition of "Saturday Candy," will be sold for $7.99 per pound, are GMO-free and made without trans-fat or high fructose corn syrup.
RoBel Confectionery will begin distributing its Tung Toos, flavored tongue tattoo sweets, in U.K. Toys R Us stores at the end of January with distribution to grocery stores, convenience stores and newsagents to soon follow. The company also announced a branding deal with Hello Kitty that features Bazooka Candy packs containing a Hello Kitty figurine and a strip of Tong Too tattoos in Hello Kitty designs. "With these names and the global hit Hello Kitty on board, I’m certain that 2014 will be the year when UK confectionery retail gets a real taste for Tung Toos," said Victoria Lebor of RoBel Confectionery.
A new spa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, aims to cater to what it calls "Kitty Queens" and "Young Princesses" -- women and girls who love the Japanese character Hello Kitty -- with a posh atmosphere and kitty-themed services. "The Hello Kitty Beauty Spa is an innovative extension to the brand which allows a younger audience to experience the luxury and pleasures of a day at the spa within an environment that represents the brand," says Fatima Sharaf, director of Sharaf Retail.
Taste of Nature has introduced Treats and Cotton Candy lines under the Hello Kitty brand. The treats have cookie dough, brownie or cupcake centers; cotton candy is offered in blue raspberry and pink vanilla varieties.
Candyality founder Terese McDonald attended the Sweets and Snacks Expo both to find new products and to make business connections. She tasted Frosted Cupcake taffy from Taffy Town, and said she'll probably stock her stores with Hello Kitty hot chocolate mix, which turns pink, for the holidays.
