Under a proposal issued Friday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, school snacks could be subject to a new set of federal standards. The guidelines would expand nutritional standards that already apply to traditional school meals to also include a la carte items and food and drinks sold in school vending machines. The proposal calls for most snacks to include fewer than 200 calories and could be in place next year following a public comment period.
