Giving nurse practitioners independent practice authority is a silo approach to medical care and goes against the team-based care model the U.S. needs, AAFP Director Wanda Filer, M.D., told a policy forum. She said while NPs and physician assistants are very valuable to patient care, physicians still have the training and expertise that makes them the most qualified professionals to lead a health team, such as a patient-centered medical home.
