Swiss voters have approved a referendum enacting compensation limits for business executives -- a move that industry groups warn could spark an exodus of corporate talent. The measure bans "golden handshakes" and "golden parachutes," and requires public companies to give investors a binding vote on executive pay. "Clearly in the longer term it will make Switzerland less attractive for entrepreneurs and managers," says Nestlé CEO Paul Bulcke.
Professionals who aren't interested in linear career paths increasingly are forging "portfolio careers," which involve taking on several contracts or freelance assignments that aren't necessarily related. "People are finding that they don’t want to do the same thing day in and day out," author Barrie Hopson says. "The traditional, single-track career pattern of the last century (think ladder) is now more difficult to find, and if you do pursue that, you’ll almost certainly have to move between companies."
